Over this past Thanksgiving holiday, you can be assured that Google is thankful for the fountainhead of the idea that its founders had 10 short years ago, and for the raw talent and intelligence of its engineers. As revealed in the latest search engine market share report from Nielson/Net Ratings, the world’s largest online search company commanded a record 61.2 percent share of all U.S. searches in October 2008.

This equates to more than 4.8 billion search queries conducted by the G-Men and G-Women from Mountain View last month. The rest of the online search industry did not fair a well. Yahoo! saw more than 12 percent fewer searches this October, compared to the same month last year. Even though the guys and gals in purple have the second largest share of the online search market, Yahoo! only captured a little less than 17 percent of the total number of search queries last month.

A complete breakdown of the current market share enjoyed by the top ten search providers can be found on our EngineWorks Resources page.

Another interesting nugget to extract from this breakdown is the fact that AOL actually increased their number of search queries in October by more than 14.5 percent, which in turn, increased their market share to 4.3 percent of the total industry.

One final note that I’m sure the five biggest players in the search industry are thankful for . . . combined, they represent more than 96 percent of all online searches currently being conducted in the United States!
