Search . . . It’ll Make You Smarter!

Posted by Sean McMahon on 10.17.2008

Last week, two professors at the University of California, Los Angeles released their findings from a research study sponsored by the Parvin Foundation that concluded that the use of online search engines can actually stimulate, and possibly improve, your brain function.  (That’s a long-winded way of saying that searching online makes you smart!)

The researchers discovered that the use of online search engines is replacing former brain-challenging activities such as completing cross-word puzzles and playing word games.  To quote this research paper published by the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, “Searching for information on a site like Google, and then navigating the results, is a complex task that taxes many parts of the brain.”

The take-away from the article titled “UCLA brain study: Put down that book and get online!” which presented this study is that as society continues to advance, our impressive industry is powering more than just online transactions.  It’s increasing brainpower!
