Online Consumers Put Themselves in the Driver Seat

Posted by Sean McMahon on 08.08.2008

I pulled this quick little nugget from the Pew Internet & American Life Project report that was released this week:  Search engine use continues to grow, with 49% of Internet users saying they use search engines on a typical day.

The Pew Research Center first began asking users about their search engine habits in January of 2002.  Back then, only 29% of Internet users surveyed said they used a search engine on a typical day.

I know that this may seem like useless trivia.  However, a quote from this report by Susannah Fox, an associate director at the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, really punctuates the importance of having your site found through search engines.

“People are basically putting themselves in the driver’s seat,” said Ms. Fox, “They have ideas about what they want to find vs. waiting for it to be served up to them.”

This Pew Research Center survey was based on interviews with more than 2,000 adults, age 18 and older, performed from April 8, 2008 to May 11, 2008.
