Is the SEM Intern Today’s Apprentice?

Posted by Courtney on 07.31.2008

As EngineWorks continues to rapidly scale both our revenues and client roster, a major concern recently expressed by our management team is if our company will be able to secure new team members who possess the Search Engine Marketing (SEM) knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to manage our world-class client campaigns.

This fact was conveyed by our company president, Sean McMahon, during an interview titled ‘Start-Up: Vital Signs of a Young Regional Company’ in the July 5, 2008 issue of The Oregonian newspaper. In this interview, Sean stated that one of his fears for the future of our company is that “we won’t find the acutely skilled people we need to stay lean and mean while meeting our clients’ needs”.

The obvious point behind this statement is that since Search Engine Marketing is not currently standard curriculum at colleges and universities, it is extremely difficult to discover young, entry-level individuals with prior exposure to cutting-edge search marketing strategies and techniques. Decyphering Google’s Ability To Index Flash

Posted by Scott Fish on 07.30.2008

As recently announced, Google and Adobe have teamed up to create a solution for effectively indexing Flash files. If successful, this partnered development should have a tremendous impact upon the SEO industry.

Now, however, Google announced on June 30th that they will be able to index textual content in SWF files, which includes “Flash ‘gadgets’ such as buttons or menus, self-contained Flash websites, and everything in between”.

In addition, Google states that it will be able to find, and differentiate, URLs within a Flash file. This has been a big problem in the past, since Flash files historically were only accessible through one file. (more…)

Competition to be Cool Just Got Hotter

Posted by Sean McMahon on 07.28.2008

Last week, we posted notice on our blog that our company just got a little cooler. That is, EngineWorks received a little cooler from Google as recognition of our good standing relationship with the world’s most popular search engine. We even stated that it’s hip to be cool. An announcement yesterday however, by a brash new search engine, may not be so hip in Google’s eyes.

Posted by Sean McMahon on 07.14.2008

Yahoo! announced that it is “opening up the core pieces of it’s algorithmic search infrastructure to third parties” in a DMNews article titled “Yahoo opens up its search algorithm” on Friday last week. The second largest search engine on the planet is calling this new open Web services platform “BOSS”, as in “Build your Own Search Service”.
