Social Media Marketing . . . It's on the Move

by Sean McMahon | May 14, 2008

Yesterday, eMarketer released its updated projections on total social media marketing revenues over the next five years.  The interactive research firm estimates that US advertisers will spend an impressive $1.4 billion for ads on online social networks by the end of 2008.

In addition, this number is projected to almost double in 2012 to more than $2.6 billion in domestic social media advertising revenue.  The following chart depicts this expected growth in annual social media ad spending.

US Online Social Network Advertising Spending, 2006-2012 (millions and % change)

The research company predicts that online social network ad spending will grow by 55% this year, down from 163% growth in 2007.  However, the good news is that spending growth at online social networks will be more than double the growth that eMarketer projects for the total US online ad market.  Today, social networks are among the most popular destinations on the Internet, especially young individuals.  As marketers, we need continue to invest in the latest means to reach consumers at those sites.
