SMX Social Media Marketing - Extra! Extra! The Social News Sites

SMX

Following a great lunch at SMX Social Media in Long Beach, California it’s time for the next session “Extra! Extra! The Social News Sites” presented by Neil Patel of Advantage Consulting Services and Chris Winfield from 10e20.  The majority of this presentation was on the different social news sites and their audiences.  Neil and Chris discussed the following:

Digg - Digg is a democratically driven news site, that has become extremely popular. According to Neil the average top stories receive around 130 links and over 15,000 visitors.  The majority of the users are make between the ages of 18 and 30.

Reddit - Reddit uses a “karma” ranking system.  Much more difficult to achieve a front page result.  Titles can make or break your posts because Reddit does not display descriptions. Audience is typically more political.

Niche Sites - These sites can be extremely effective because they are focused and are typically smaller communities. Great forum for attracting relevant links.

A few of my takeaways:

  • Participate and build networks.
  • Write great content!
  • Promote great content written by others.
  • Write interesting titles.

Now it’s time for a quick break and then “A Marketer’s guide to Social Bookmarking & Tagging“.
