20 Common Search Engine Optimization Mistakes

The following is a list of common mistakes that may prevent your site from achieving excellent rankings within the search engines.


1. Not conducting keyword research.
2. Not using relevant keywords in your title tags.
3. Not repeating those relevant keywords in your h1 tags.
4. Creating title tags that are too long.
5. Using images as page headers.
6. Developing JavaScript heavy or Flash-based navigation.
7. Not building an html sitemap.
8. Keyword stuffing your content.
9. Hiding keyword rich text.
10. Not using alt tags on your images.
11. Not installing a tracking/analytics system.
12. Not benchmarking your progress.
13. Excessive use of non-crawlable media (i.e Flash, etc.)
14. Not developing an XML sitemap.
15. Having multiple domains serving up the same content.
16. Not writing enough relevant content.
17. Not writing fresh content on a regular bases.
18. Submitting to hundreds of free directories.
19. Not submitting to at least one quality directory.
20. Not researching authoritative SEO sites.

    One thing that can really get you as well is not properly re-directing your sites…..

    I would add the mistake of: building a site with poor HTML structure. That is a hassle.
